The little voice telling you that maybe it’s time to through in the towel, may not be the reasonable guiding force you need. This voice may be fueling insecurities impeding your growth. All your life you may have had whispers of self-doubt following you like a bad habit and you can't shake it. Deep down you may not want to. Periodically you need those murmurings, the subtle undertones preventing bad decisions, actions. The question is: what motivates them or keeps them at bay when you have a mission to accomplish?

Holding a grudge isn't healthy for heart, head or body-don't bother giving energy or time to it. In business it will cost you. Infecting future interactions you have to spend months mending. Some may sniff around networking groups to complain because of one incident that happened when my aunt was a natural blond. Not worth it. Turn that frown upside down and if you can't resolve it -leave it alone.

Then there is the too honest aficionado. Well-versed in every curse word in five languages, adding peeled layers of attitude seemingly sold as truth, doled out in emotional style. Have a coke and sit down. One, appreciation for the English language is not lost on me and to date I won't believe you any more than usual on any given topic by swearing so keep it to complete sentences. Two, its professional etiquette and good common sense-so if you are angling for respect CAN the bad language. Otherwise the potty mouth comes off like an old comedian begging for one last curtain call.

The shadow puppet is the one watching from the corner, never interacting and wonders why their business isn't taking off. The career wallflower locking in on the complaints of being invisible is boring and screams of question marks no one has energy to address. For the record, we see you, we are surmising as to whether you are nesting or on the verge of passing out. Neither is a positive. Get out of the corner, talk to people. Ask them what attracted them to the event or opportunity you both found yourself at.

In other words-do something! Engage. Stop creating false-positives by assuming the spread of business cards on the table means something. It does mean something, you recognized that others should be aware of your branding but that is not the end game. You build a bridge one piece of wood or steel at a time and you have to keep it going with strong substance.

Noise makers are some of the most interesting. They have the tallest tales but fail on delivery. Lies leave a trail-don't tell them. Listen to me now-it does not work. Lies climb over your reputation like ivy. Unstoppable and inevitably you lose.

Relinquish the kiddie antics, fables and nursery rhymes and join the grown up's table. We're saving a spot for you.

Until next time~

4 Ways To Remedy Yourself Of Toxic Connections

Being a little more selective about who you connect with will save you the heartaches and disappointment in the long run. Trust me, take the steps and you will create a bounty of fresh leads instead of the dead end black hole of free food and drink, finding the occasional connection.

Let's get right into it.

Know Your Business-Avoid Being The Target

You have to know what type of business you run on a daily basis before you can seek out those who can become a valuable resource. The money grabber is only looking out for number one and rarely gives back. This person will attach themselves to groups, prowling for a willing face. Usually not a care in the world for what you do but what you can do for them. Offering a fragment of suggestions I refer to as general information so as to sound intelligent. Beware. They have played this game before, so instead of hurriedly scheduling the one-on-one, have a conversation right at your current venue. If you feel comfortable after, accept a business card and plan a meet up later.

Random Acts Of Stupidity

Stop making instant connections on LinkedIn or other sources before you have a chance to meet the person, unless you are quite confident of the return. Another kinder-gentler way of inviting is to inbox the potential client, letting them know of YOUR intentions. Sharing a link of your community efforts especially if they tie into your business model is good. Trying to connect with high profile professionals by telling them you are a fan and would like to get together is not good business or common sense.

The Buffet Kings (And Queens)

You know the ones. Easy to spot because as soon as they make an appearance dishes and drinks go missing so fast you wonder if the organizer hired a magician. Their idea of networking is to throw a few business cards on the table, say "hi" to at least 2 people, and be the last to leave so they can bag the leftovers. Yes! I have seen it. Be careful of who is extending the invitation to events as well as who you mingle with at such functions. If well-planned, these network timeframes are scheduled not as eating contests but to formulate a connection to build on at a later time. Being a responsible connector means you should be alert, attentive, ready to chat-not comatose, sleepy or disinterested. The last thing anyone wants to see is someone sidling up ready for the trough.
When alcohol is being served, don't park at the bar, this may give the wrong impression and again, why did you come to this networking event? Hmm, self examination is a must.

A Is For Apple

Type A personalities thrive -they do. They can be blunt, straightforward, show-offish- take your pick. Coming from certain stock, real or imagined, does not give you the right to be insulting, demanding or crass. On the other spectrum being overly sensitive can be a problem too, as it becomes exhausting if you feel the scrutiny of each syllable uttered. You can create a silent dust cloud quicker than Linus from Charlie Brown, so ease up. Intelligence isn't owned by the minority, share thoughts and ideas to benefit all coming into your space so the wisdom will inspire growth, change and trust. And if you can't channel it-button it. You are not the only person in the room.

There is something to be said about being humble, it empowers, opens hearts and minds to reason, instead of reducing the message.

Until next time~
