Life's Lessons-Learn Laugh Grow

Life can be tough enough without adding unnecessary burdens to it. We tend to take a long time to figure out what works, don't we? Sometimes it takes an entire lifetime to learn very important lessons and even longer to implement the slightest changes to make us better. Throughout the year these have been my observations, things that I have come to realize as continuing lessons. I hope you enjoy the journey.

1. Learn from your past-it may unlock pain you have been holding onto far too long-

2. Care about what you do so that you put more thought into what you will become-

3. Realize you have potential for success so you stop putting it off until tomorrow-

4. Stop living in the past or when they find you that is where you will be-

5. Kindness is free-stop spending so much on hatred-

6. If you are waiting for the right moment-you'll miss it-

7. Falling down hurts-not getting up cripples-

8. Work on being good instead of being perfect-

9. Be your best you even when no one is watching-

10. Learn true love so you stop accepting substitutes for it-

I hope this list finds you happy and whole. Live, learn, grow, repeat.

Until next time~

When Money Is Not The Answer Or The Question

At the end of a 10-hour work day the last thing you want to do is rush home, cook dinner and help with homework. The reality is that a large majority of men and women are doing exactly that. From sun up to sun down relentless schedules bleed into seasons until the idea of a weekend becomes almost obsolete.

The sacrifices we make do not go unnoticed, especially the image of women playing hard at the dual role of family head and breadwinner. Not enough attention is given to the men in my estimation, which is why I took the time to interview a few hard-working guys who opened up about how it was actually harder to bring home the bacon but not for the reasons you might think.

Tim: "I felt guilty working so much. I get up at 4am, travel most of the year and when I am in town, I still have to entertain clients. I would look over at other tables and feel extremely envious because I saw what looked like parents and kids out eating and stuff, you know, all together. That really hurt."

Mike: "I lost track of what time of day it was because whether I am going or coming from work, my wife and kids are asleep. I am missing all of the important things, what in the world am I doing?"

Jack: "I was there for every birth but can't remember when my sons took their first step. I missed out on the first day of school for two of my kids and I feel regret about it all the time."

Monte: My wife understands that I have to be away and the money is great, much more than I ever thought I could make. With jobs being somewhat scarce, I don't feel comfortable walking away without a safety net. I have worked too hard to get where I am and I am not about to quit now. My fear is two-fold though. I think at some point my wife will lose interest or we will grow apart. We don't even talk about having kids, when would that happen?

These CEO's not only found the time but continue making strides, improving the mindset of what fathers can do to lead family happiness and keep it going. See what business leaders, Rob Fujioka of FUHU, INTUIT CEO Brad Smith and others had to say: http://time.com/3342431/work-life-balance-fatherhood-ceos/.

You have our support and respect dads-hang in there!

Until next time~

What Is Not Going On Here?

Typical of any family is the need to care for and protect itself. In the last few months much of the discussion has turned to race though, when obviously the issues go well beyond that.

For instance, the officer may have resigned but the resignation to absolve responsibility leaves a pregnant pause. The same resonates when you think about the lives of our youth that need us even if they think they don't. Or when what may transpire behind closed doors becomes fodder for every breathing thing on the planet.

We knew what it was to be young. The know it all who invented the world-we were immortal, so we thought. But then one day something gets out of hand, words and actions quickly spiral out of recognition. Out of control.

We all carry the weight and burden of bad decision-making and the blame no matter where it lands. The crisis doesn't feel any different or ends any cleaner after it is trumped up over the next days, weeks and months, making everyone involved famous or infamous.

Burning personal property, looting, cursing, screaming and rioting, have these actions made radical change in your favor? Did anyone participating in these acts really benefit?

Temporary stimulus at best.

What about a domestic fight that drew in more views than a prized bout? Does anyone feel any better about what happened after the facts were brought to the attention of the public? Tensions run high, emotions acute, as every person, plant and animal becomes a critic. We got it. Dial it down a bit, there is more at stake here.

It used to be that children and youths respected the authority of their parents and adults. Individuals would think before they spoke or acted out. With the craze of instant gratification, many of them don't see the need for patience, kindness, loyalty. They don't care.

Cultivated qualities, we old school folks know all too well, have been tossed out as either absurd or out of date. Interesting-if the modern way of living and thinking is working out so grandly, we should all be dancing in the street.

Social opinions should not dictate what you know to be right. Since when did it become ok to disconnect to what is going on at home but be completely connected to every online orifice? Take the time to examine what is going on in your own household.

Before we start the picketing, pillaging and blaming, maybe it’s time to take a good hard look in the mirror-a real hard look. You may not like what you see but it should at the very least cause you to reexamine yourself, motives and intent.

As difficult as that concept may be to comprehend-the change starts with every single one of us. None of us-not one of us cruises through life without mistakes, and becoming a good person is not a patent pending.

Now if you have it all figured out, I guess you can raise your hands-if you’re sure.

Until next time~
