Healing The Bully Where It Hurts

"I thought it would be fun to make him cry!" "I hurt, so why not make her suffer too!" I hate everybody!" "My life stinks!" By the time these words hit the surface, the internal implications have already played a twisted and significant role in wrecking havoc in the minds and hearts of a person who becomes a bully.

The rationale: strength, the reality: weakness. Cracks in the armor are repairable if proper understanding, guidance and help is received before it is too late. First off: identifying the pain source. The bully may not make the correlation between learned behavior and pain but the results are not pleasant and inevitably lead to a painful path. Oftentimes leading to school suspension, jail time or worse. It is up to the parents and not the responsibility of school teachers to teach and raise your children life skills. Fundamental rights instilled early on can prevent the dangerous curve of mind bending, irrational thoughts and behavior.

Television has its benefit but it too has been used as a venue to educate or rear your child. Much of the programming is beneficial for sure, but cannot replace responsible, mature leadership from loving parents or guardians. There are some shows our preteens and young adults observe as rote. With a twisted view on the intelligence of the adults, who are many times made out to be dull in their senses. Do not fall for this. There is entertainment and then there is the ridiculous. Some youth adopt these as more than amusement and begin speaking to parents and other adults as if they lack common sense and reason. This spills over into how they treat their peers because now the line has been crossed and they have taken their little act out of the home and onto the road. Is it me or are the headship roles blurred, scorched and fit to be tied?

This false sense of security tends to make youth feel invincible, that they are the ones ready to accept full responsibility for their actions and take the lead role in guiding their lives because a favorite show's character does it. Remember this young people, and read this slowly, THESE PROGRAMS ARE SCRIPTED AND NOT REAL LIFE. If for some reason you do not have the role models at home, reach out into the community, trusted friends who are in the capacity to really help you instead of striking out in frustration.

There is a sense of entitlement that some young ones have cultivated today, which distorts their view of human rights and dignity. If what they want is not available, they should just take whatever it is, no matter the consequence. So what, if it belongs to someone else, I want it-end of story. This bully mentality is selfish, needy and boring. When that 17 minute program is finished and the cameras are off, what is left? The actors go on with whatever their own loves, lives, concerns and morals are. What are you left with? The perception that what you saw is how real life should be? Only problem is-who is writing your story?

Until next time.

Dawn
